Greetings from my hotel room in Wausau, WI! Got to bed at 2:30AM after last night’s show… so slightly later than usual today.
And today I’m thinking about decisions. We make a bunch of decisions every day. Would you like fries with that? Decision. UPS, USPS or FEDEX? Decision. Dessert, er no? Decision. Most decisions don’t have a huge impact on our lives, but every now and then we’ll have a life changer…
Should I quit my job? Leave my spouse? Have that surgery?…
We can really wrestle with the big ones. They can change the entire course of our lives from that point on. I mean, so can the small ones if you repeat them enough — saying “yes” to fries every time, well… that decision will have consequences. But the big ones — we know the impact they’ll make. So we can struggle with them.
Whenever you have two or more choices and one of the options is to just continue the way you’ve always done it, that’s usually the easiest way to go. If you have a bad relationship, the tipping point has to be pretty severe before you’d ever consider moving on. The decision to leave a job or a relationship is always a tough one, and one that will change the course of your life from that point on.
And sometimes life just gives you choices you never really ever wanted to have to deal with at all. Often these are health related. Have a surgery that could ease the pain or the problem, but might also leave you paralyzed or dead?… These are the ones we hope to never have to make. And the fear and anxiety that comes with making them intensifies the entire situation.
This is where having a relationship with God, the source, the universe, or your intuition — which could all be the same thing really, just different names for it — comes in handy.
I’ll never forget years ago, my mother got sick in the ecoli outbreak in Milwaukee. She was in the hospital for four months. They recommended a surgery — she was 85 at the time. It would have been a terrible surgery — taking out a part of here colon maybe? I don’t remember exactly, but it would have had serious and awful long term side effects. They said it was necessary. They set the appointment. Everyone was prepped and ready for the surgery. They wheeled her in, and she refused it.
She absolutely refused it.
They called me into the operating room to talk to her, and she was adamant — did not want the surgery. So they sent her back to her room, and everyone went home for the day.
And she was right. It turned out the surgery was totally unnecessary and she wound up living for twelve more years after that. Twelve years without the horrible side effects that she would have had if she had done it.
That is the power of self knowledge. That is the power of listening to your heart. She knew, internally, what the doctors didn’t. And she had the strength to say no in that situation. I love her for that. I love her for giving me the courage to have made some incredibly scary moves in my lifetime that have made all the difference for me.
I’m sober today. Quitting drinking and doing drugs is scary. I’m a financial advisor today. Quitting a job I was successful at to make a career change later in life was scary as hell. But I got calm and centered and followed my heart, and your intuition will never let you down. And sometimes — often in life, really — the magic is just on the other side of the fear.
So, be kind to yourself. If you have a tough decision to make you probably already have a strong internal feeling about it. Is it intuition or obsession? They can be hard to tell apart sometimes. But your heart will never fail you.
The stronger your relationship with God, with the universe, with your soul, your inner voice, the watcher — the easier decisions will be. I wish you well today, and always. May the future you create be uniquely yours and incredibly blessed and wonderful.
