Up early, as usual, today. Gotta get out the door by 7:30 today, though – not usual at all for a Sunday. Why, oh why, would I need to be out the door that early on a day off?… because today is SUPERCOOLFUNDAY, that’s why. What, you ask – what on earth is SUPERCOOLFUNDAY? Sit back, kids and let me tell you a story… SCFUNDAY started eleven years ago, back when the grandkids were quite young yet – like 3, 5 and 7 years old? Laurie Geschke babysat them almost every day, and I was busy building my business at the time. I didn’t get to see them very often. So I came up with this idea – one day a year I’ll take the day off from work and plan an entire day of fun things to do with them. The first year was awesome. Oshkosh zoo, water park, Olive Garden, TJ Maxx I think… by the end of the day they were all passed out in the back seat of the car. And we’ve kept the tradition up every year so far. As they got older, I wasn’t sure they’d want to keep doing it. It got harder to think of an entire day of fun things to do. Most of the SCFUNDAYS were great, a couple misses in there I guess, but… they were often preceded by a sleepover watching a movie with malts and popcorn (not this year, though). And – as they got older they got their own jobs and schedules we have to work around, too. So these days it isn’t always done on a day I have to take off from work. Now that they’re 14 – 16 and 18 years old… well, today might be the last one, I guess. I don’t know. That makes me really sad to think about. I’m kind of amazed they’re still willing to do it. I know I’m really looking forward to today, I think we have some fun things planned. They’re top secret, of course. Part of the fun is them wondering where we’re going. And as I look back on this annual tradition, I’m so glad we’ve kept it going. Great memories there. And life is just so fleeting, you know? Two of the grandkids are driving now. There’s a better chance of us being asleep in the back seat at the end of the day today than the three of them. Kids and grandkids have a way of letting you know you better enjoy every moment, because five seconds later they’ll be eighteen and going off to college. And for those of us who have been through it – what a crazy mix of emotions, eh? All we can do is enjoy the moments we have. And have as much fun as possible along the way. And at least once a year, for eleven years now – we have a special day together. A SUPERCOOLFUNDAY. That day is today. We are so blessed. I am so grateful. There is no trademark on SCFUNDAY. I invite you to start your own tradition. It’s one of the best days of the year, every year, for me. Make the best of every moment, today and always.
