Newsflash: we were never meant to agree. As many different people as there are in the world, everyone is totally unique and it has always been that way. You will never find anyone who thinks, acts, dresses or feels exactly the way you do. Why am I thinking about this today? It’s daylight saving time, of course. In most states it is, anyway – but not Hawaii or Arizona. And a bunch of countries, but not all of them. The country that started it all was Germany, actually – in 1916, as a way to conserve fuel for the war effort. The US adopted it in 1918. So – why does it still exist? Seems like a lot of screwing around, and really – a day is a day, you know? 19 states have laws or resolutions to move to daylight saving time permanently. Can’t be done without a change to federal laws apparently. Anyway – this is the kind of thing that gets me thinking – can’t we all just agree to stick with one or the other? Why not save daylight year round? Well – people would have to agree on that and we’d never get everyone in every state and/or country to do that. Some people would want “regular” time year round, some would prefer DST – and many would want to just stick with what we’ve been doing for over 50 years now. But this is what we do as humans. The concept of creating dates and time and calendars and schedules are man made. A day is just a day to every other creature on earth. We need to break it down as humans otherwise it would be really tough to live our lives as we know it. And we can come up with this concept of moving the clocks back and forth and get most states and some countries to follow suit, but not all of them. To get it to change would take a great deal of discussion, time and effort – and – is it worth it? Probably not. But this is just the topic that got me thinking about how we as humans will never agree fully on anything. We will never agree on politics, religion, food, sports, clothing, or almost anything else you can think of. Even the things most people would agree on – like murderers and rapists should be arrested and prosecuted – we will never agree on just what is justified prosecution in regard to the crime. Death penalty or no? Abortion rights or no? Vaccines or no? We will never agree. So, knowing that, no matter what your opinion is on anything – or how certain you feel within your core that you think you are right on any topic – someone else out there will vehemently disagree with you. Then what? Get angry? Pretty common response, right? Is this why we were created? Everyone is unique, but we all hate anyone or anything that doesn’t fit our idea of what is the “good” uniqueness? It’s a tough call these days with so much unrest. I’m not sure I really have an answer here other than this – if I think “what would God think about this situation” I don’t think the answer would be “you should sock that guy”. So many of the problems we face, so many crimes against humanity – boil down to a difference of opinion. I really like daylight saving time. I’m never a fan when we roll back in fall. I’m for keeping it year round. But not enough to do anything about it… welcome to the conversation within my head today.
