I think we have a choice in life to be either creative or destructive. To be alive at all means we will be destructive in some way, of course. Simply existing means we’ll have to eat and find clothes and shelter, etc - and if we drive at all, we’ll need to power that vehicle. We use energy to power heating and cooling. And all that consumption means we’ll be using plastics and paper and we’ll have a need for fuel of some kind. So, as humans we are inherently destructive in those ways. But I’m talking more about our mental state of being here. We get what we focus on. And I’ve always tried to create things rather than destroy them. It can be music or art, but it can also be a business or a relationship of some kind. It’s much harder to create something than it is to destroy it. If you want to build a house it takes time and planning. If you want a serious relationship, it also takes time. If you want to be a musician or an artist, it takes time to learn and hone your craft. If you want to have a successful business, that can take years to create. And all those things can be wiped out very quickly once they’re built. You can tear a house down much faster than you can build one. You can ruin a relationship or a business very quickly (anyone remember Enron?)… and yet there are so many people who seem to be hell bent on wanting to criticize. On scoffing at other people instead of cheering for their successes. On tearing others down rather than living life in a way that creates more love and hope. That, to me, is living a destructive life. I can’t be around anyone who has that vibe. And this week I’m realizing how many great people I know who have created extremely successful businesses, relationships, music and artwork… they are full of energy that lifts your spirit. And I’d say this is pretty much the type of people I have in my life these days. We will only create a better life experience for the world when we, as humans, live from that place inside us that creates. Haters?… I have no time for that. You want to hate other people because of the color of their skin, or their gender, or any other generalization like that - probably not anyone I’ll spend much time with. You want to scoff at other people’s achievements instead of giving them the credit they deserve for their hard work?… or look for any reason to call someone out as hypocritical?… why? We have so little time. Why do we hate each other so much? Why do we look for things to disagree with? Why all the anger?… creatives - you’re my people. Art. Music. Business. And a life attitude that celebrates the achievements of others. That brings more love and joy into the lives of those around you. We could use more of that. I love to support creative people in any way I can. So, go create something today. Create a special moment for someone in your life. Create some art or music. Create a plan for that business you’ve always wanted to start. At the end, you’ll be able to look back on your life and see all the things you’ve done that created special moments for others. And how the butterfly effect worked its magic as well. As a species, when we finally learn to lose all that anger and hatred, we will have taken a huge step forward. And every one of us has a choice to make. Creation or destruction? Let’s create a better world every day in any way we can.
I have spent my life so far, being creative. I never knew, until quite recently, what that means for me and my life. Most recently I have found myself in a lull creating. It has left me feeling off. People around me have noticed that I haven’t been creating and miss seeing what I do. I can’t give to others when I don’t give myself permission to be creative. Thanks, Dave. Great read.
