I listened to side one — well, what used to be side one anyway — the first six songs — on the “Best of Bread” album yesterday. Pure gold, every song. It was put in my head when one my friends mentioned listening to the song “Everything I Own” yesterday and how deeply it affected him while thinking about his father. It’s just that type of song, you know? Many of — maybe all those first six songs are. I was emotionally moved by all of them. The song “IF”? Are you kidding me? Maybe the greatest love song ever written…
And a couple times I thought “why am I doing this to myself”?… right? Like — by the end I got to my office to do some work, and I was an emotional wreck. But sometimes that’s the point. You have to just let go and feel it, whatever it is. Anger, love, sadness, grief… it’s a wild ride, this life we are given. And I’m not one to try to suppress it. I wanna feel it. All of it, the good and the bad — you can’t hide from life. You can try to not deal with things as they come up, but… why? Why not just let it flow? Surrender to it all?…
Fear keeps us stagnant. Not gonna do this, not gonna try that, I like this, I don’t even wanna know about that… my life will be contained in this box of my own making…
Fuck that.
There is no box except that we believe it for ourselves. Throw away the box of fear and live life without limits as much as possible. Be curious. Try new things. Talk to people, listen to their stories…
And for your own sake — let music take you wherever you want to go. Because it is one of the greatest therapies I know of, no matter what’s going on in your life. Get that anger and frustration out. I think a few of you have seen that in me when I sing “Fight For Your Right”, eh? Let it out. Let it flow… love songs, and songs from your childhood, and songs your parents used to listen to, and…
Wow…
What a world.
What a life.
What an opportunity we have.
Live it fully.
Feel it.
Listen to music every day.
What song do you want to hear right now?… Why wait?
